Texas softball pitcher Miranda Elish was taken to the hospital Friday night after a freak accident during a NCAA Division I Super Regional game against Alabama.
During the second inning in Tuscaloosa, Alabama’s Elissa Brown hit a chopper in front of the plate and Texas catcher Mary Iakopo threw to second base to try to get a forceout.
But Elish was in the way, and the ball hit her square in the face. She collapsed and stayed down on the ground as teammates checked on her. An ambulance arrived and she taken off on a stretcher and to the emergency room as a precaution.
Texas tweeted during the third inning that Elish was doing fine at the hospital.
“The entirety appears to be OK,” Texas trainer Mike White mentioned later at the ESPN broadcast. “She’s hurting somewhat bit, however she’s in excellent spirits.”
Iakopo hit a three-run house run within the 3rd to chop into Alabama’s Four-Zero lead.
“She’s been our workhorse all 12 months, and we are right here as a result of (Elish),” White mentioned. “Not anything higher than to peer Mary do this.”
Texas received 7-Five to keep away from removing and drive a decisive Recreation three within the Tremendous Regional collection.
